Project 3
Project ID: SN-18-113/3
Recipient: Hôpital Régional de Ziguinchor (Ziguinchor, Senegal)
Delivery Date: January 3, 2025
Ziguinchor Regional Hospital, the primary healthcare center for a population of more than 700,000 inhabitants, has long suffered from crippling deficiencies. By the end of 2022, the hospital had no cardiologist, no anesthesiologist, no resuscitator, no emergency doctor. Our on-site evaluation revealed that the hospital itself was dying.
After careful consideration of needs and risks, Casamance Healthcare Systems, Inc. (CHSI) launched a fundraising campaign to resuscitate this beleaguered but vital institution.
The cost of sending medical supplies to Senegal has increased dramatically since the completion of CHSI’s first two projects (both of which benefited the Hôpital de la Paix, the Regional Hospital’s sister institution in Ziguinchor). Despite a price increase of more than $10,000, CHSI was able to fully fund a container of supplies and equipment for the Ziguinchor Regional Hospital by the spring of 2023.
Political unrest in Senegal significantly delayed CHSI’s shipment of the supplies, but now, following the peaceful transfer of power to the country’s newly elected President and Prime Minister, the shipment can safely take place. The supplies are scheduled to arrive in Ziguinchor in November 2024.
